Dedicated Server
End-users do not purchase a dedicated server. Instead,
the term dedicated server refers to a type of leasing agreement. Here
the client-in most cases a large business- leases a server that is not
used by anyone else.
Having a dedicated server agreement gives an enterprise more flexibility
and control. The enterprise can pick whatever operating system and hardware
it wants. The hardware is owned by a third party who provides technical
support.
There are no standards within the industry that clearly define the
role of service providers that host a dedicated server. Therefore, it
is incumbent upon the enterprise to carefully read all service level
agreements (SLAs). There should also be notes in the agreement about
consequences for server downtime.
