Email Server

An email server is also known as a mail server. It works very much like a post office in a virtual network. It consists of a storage area and holds email for users connected to the network.

An email server is a database that responds to definable rules and commands. These commands determine how the server should work. The commands let the server know how to react to mail marked with specific addresses and extensions. It also suggests when mail should be transferred to other mail servers.

The person responsible for maintaining an email server is often called the postmaster. Generally mail servers function without any manual intervention. However, servers have been known to crash and the postmaster must be ready to intervene. In addition, the postmaster sets rules to eliminate spam and deal with expired accounts.
