Server Software
End-users type in a Web address and the Web page is sent
to their computer. While this process may seem almost magical, it requires
server software. Server software has the ability to send out Web pages,
images, or raw files when a client requests them.
Server software also has the ability to keep track of information about
client requests. It can log the IP address of the client and note the
response time for sending back the file. This information lets the Webmaster
collect information about what Web content is most popular and most
often requested. This is particularly helpful for online advertisers.
In the late 1990s server software companies experienced a stock market
boom. Companies like Apache Software saw stocks soar because Wall Street
thought that Internet business would continue to expand exponentially.
Unfortunately for these companies, the Internet bubble collapsed and
their stocks fell back to earth.
